Single Wall, Double Wall, and Triple Wall Coffee Cups - What's The Difference?

Single Wall, Double Wall, and Triple Wall Coffee Cups - What's The Difference?

Paper coffee cups seem like simple, everyday objects until you have to pick one for your coffee shop or restaurant. Then you’re faced with an oddly baffling question-- should you get single wall, double wall or triple wall coffee cups? And is there a significant difference between these three?

Apart from the number of ‘walls’ or layers, there are several key differences between these three types of coffee cups that you should consider when selecting cups for your business.

Single Wall Coffee Cups

Single wall paper cups have, as you may have figured out, a single layer of paper making up the body of the cup. Even though they only have a single layer, these cups are typically made with high quality food grade paper board, so they can withstand even long periods of holding liquids.

The main issue with single wall cups is their lack of insulation. Because of this, holding them with hot beverages inside is nearly impossible to do without burning yourself. Although some single wall cups can safely serve milk-based beverages of up to 80℃, as a safety precaution it is generally not advised to serve hot beverages in this type of cup.

If however you’re simply going to serve chilled, room temperature or slightly warm beverages, then single wall cups are a great option. They’re also the more economical and eco-friendly option: they consume less paper and less energy in production. And because they are lighter than other types of cups, more of them can be transported at a time, reducing transport related emissions.

Double Wall Coffee Cups

Double wall coffee cups are made with two layers of paper, thereby giving the consumer more insulation and protection when holding hot drinks. How can you tell the difference between a single and double wall cup? If you run your finger down the side of the cup and feel an indentation at the bottom, that usually indicates a double wall cup.

Double wall cups are preferred by many coffee shop and restaurant owners since they are able to provide some insulation without costing significantly more or using a lot more material than single wall cups. They also have the benefit of customisation. You can basically have any design you want printed on the coffee cup, and use it as a branding and marketing tool.

Triple Wall Coffee Cups

When it comes to insulation and protection, the triple wall cup outperforms them all. It’s made up of three layers: a food grade paper board, an inner insulated board and an external ripple/ corrugated layer that gives it insulating air pockets. While this construction does make the triple wall cup more costly, you get what you pay for in its performance. It exhibits excellent heat retention qualities and is the most rigid and durable of them all. If you serve a lot of hot teas and black coffee, it would be a good idea to invest in triple wall coffee cups.

Like the double wall, triple wall cups can also be custom printed to help with your branding. Combined with their excellent insulation properties, which offer a more comfortable hold, overall a triple wall cup can leave a very positive impression on consumers.
